Each year, birds and bird-watchers flock to Mississippi's Gulf Coast, making it one of the most exciting birding destinations in the United States.
In a new book, "Guide to Birding Coastal Mississippi and Adjacent Counties," three seasoned Mississippi birders lead readers through the area's swamps, forests and beaches, dispensing plenty of insider advice along the way.
The book is written by Southern Mississippi resident and nationally known birding expert Judith A. Toups, and co-authors Jerry Bird and Stacy Jon Peterson.
It is a thorough guide to bird-rich sites in Hancock, Harrison, Jackson, Pearl River, Stone, Forrest and George counties and the Barrier Islands.
The book includes maps, detailed descriptions of the locations and the birds that inhabit or visit them, a list of the birds found in the region with information about where and when they can be found, charts that illustrate when during the year birds are most likely to appear, and lots of advice on how to get the most out of a Mississippi birding excursion.
