A Sheffield man is back behind bars after escaping c Sheriffs deputies' custody last weekend by faking an illness.
Franklin County Sheriff Larry Plott said Jessie Ford, 24, of 605 St. Louis Ave. in Sheffield, was returned to the Franklin County Jail early Wednesday morning after he was caught by the Muscle Shoals Police Department during a routine traffic stop.
"I was called around 1 a.m. Wednesday morning," Plott said. "He [Ford] was immediately brought back to the county jail."
Ford has been charged with second-degree escape in addition to third-degree burglary and second-degree theft.
According to the Code of Alabama, second-degree escape is a Class C felony, which is punishable with one year and one day to 10 years in prison upon conviction.
"When an inmate escapes, they not only risk their safety from potential injuries sustained in the escape itself, but they also risk other serious punishment," Franklin County District Attorney Joey Rushing said.
He added that an escape charge can result with bond or punishment revocation.
Ford fled police custody last weekend after being taken to the hospital for complaints of chest pains, Plott said.
