A local woman passed away yesterday morning as a result of injuries sustained in a house fire Wednesday afternoon.
Lula Suggs, 95, of 1303 S Jackson Ave., died shortly after midnight in the burn center at UAB Hospital in Birmingham Thursday.
Russellville Fire and Police were dispatched on the initial call at 5:24 p.m. Wednesday afternoon after Suggs' neighbor noticed smoke coming from the house.
Upon their arrival, firefighters found Suggs lying on the kitchen floor. She was quickly removed and transported to Russellville Hospital before being flown to UAB.
"She sustained burns to about 90 percent of her body," Russellville Fire Marshal Bobby Malone said. "Ninety percent is bad on anybody, but when you consider her age, it just made it that much worse."
Malone added that it appeared Suggs was preparing some coffee on the kitchen stove when the right sleeve of her night gown caught fire.
