The reading students at Russellville Middle School brought Mary Shelley's story of Frankenstein to life with a drama after reading an abridged version of the classic novel.
Reading teacher Angela Funderburke said this is the first year the reading students have read the book as part of their classroom assignment, but have enjoyed their new challenge.
"We watched the original movie first, and then read the book," she said. "The movie is so different from the book that seeing the movie first made it more fun."
The students read a fun, easy to read version of Shelley's classic novel, then began working on the dramatic presentation of the story.
"We set up different scenes from the story," Funderburke said. "The drama presentation has 10 scenes from the book."
Funderburke added reading the book and performing the drama made reading fun and exciting while exposing the students to a classic novel.
"Most everyone did not know that Frankenstein is the name of the monster's creator," she said. "They thought that Frankenstein was the name of the monster. A few students didn't recognize the name Frankenstein or a picture of the monster."
The drama was presented to RMS students as well as Russellville Elementary students.
The drama and the story were a collaborative effort from all the reading teachers at RMS and Funderburke said they plan to make the Frankenstein drama an annual event.
