2001 club champs crowned: Northwood and Briarwood country clubs had their respective club championships in recent weeks.
At Northwood, Judge Little shot a 67-69-136 to win by six strokes over Dan Angero. Third place went to Scott Morgan at 146 with Doyle Bryan and Steve Stewart tying for fourth at 149.
At Briarwood, Clinton Hales defeated Willie Frazier in sudden death for the men's club championship. Both fired even-par 144 in regulation. Hales shot a first-round 70 followed by a 74. Frazier shot a sizzling 68 in the second round after opening with a 76.
In third place was Mac Barnes with Robert Sanford taking fourth and Daniel Boles coming in fifth.
Also at Briarwood, Pam Posey took the women's club championship by 13 strokes over Cathy McFerrin. Posey shot a 76-71-147 with McFerrin firing a 79-81-160. In third place at 168 was Jean Murphy.
In the seniors division at Northwood, Ed Broome's 71-73-144 was good for first place. Alan Hart and Randy Pool both shot 147 to tie for second place.
Geneva Wedgeworth took the women's senior division at Briarwood with a 91-88-179. In second place was Helen Clark with Vernice Scott placing third.
Frankie Wagner Benefit set for Sept. 21: A benefit tournament for Frankie Wagner will be held on Sept. 21 at Briarwood Country Club.
Entry fee for the four-person scramble is $400 per team. Entry fee includes dinner and the opportunity for door prizes.
The first 25 teams to enter will be accepted.
Checks may be made payable to: Frankie Wagner Cancer Fund and mailed to Briarwood Country Club, Box 3250, Meridian, MS 39303 or turned in at the pro shop at Briarwood. Donations can be made at any Citizens National Bank.

Just around the corner: Beaver Creek near Newton will host a Jack and Jill Tournament Saturday.
A pair of challenge matches will be held this weekend. Philadelphia Country Club will host Union Golf Club for the third-annual Citizens Cup with each club having won once in previous meetings. Philadelphia won at PCC in 1999 with Union winning last year at UGC.
The sixth-annual Ryder Cup-type competition between Decatur Country Club and Newton Country Club will be played at Decatur, Saturday-Sunday.
The John O'Neil Johnson Seniors Open Golf Tournament is scheduled for Sept. 11-12 at Lakeview Golf Course. Play in the three-person scramble begins at 9 a.m. both days. The tournament is for golfers 50 years and older. Entry fee is $25 per person or $75 per team. For more information, contact the Lakeview Pro Shop at 693-3301 by Sept. 5.
Decatur Country Club will also host a seniors tournament on Sept. 13.
Beaver Creek will host a ladies tournament on Sept. 22.
Also on Sept. 22, the fourth-annual Dancing Rabbit Festival three-person scramble at Zach Brooks Golf Club at Macon will take place. Entry fee is $40 per person for the 27-hole event. For more information, call 662-726-4456.
The annual Hog Tournament at Decatur Country Club is slated for Sept. 29-30.
The sixth-annual NAMI Mississippi tournament is slated for Oct. 11 at Ponta Creek Golf Course at NAS Meridian. Entry fee for the four-man scramble is $50 per person. For more information, call 601-679-2526 or 601-679-2129. Proceeds benefit NAMI Mississippi, the state's voice on mental illness.
