On a day of national prayer and rememberance for the victims and survivors of the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, the third week of the prep football season will go on tonight as scheduled for public schools.
The Mississippi Private Schools Association, however, has postponed its league games, according to Lamar athletic director Doc Stephens. MPSA members have to option of cancelling the game or playing on Saturday or Monday night.
Lamar's home game with Heidelberg Academy will be played Saturday with the kickoff set for 6 p.m. The Founder's Day events and tailgate dinner that had been planned for Friday will be held Saturday from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Tonight's big game could be at Northeast Lauderdale where the Trojans will battle the West Lauderdale Knights. At stake is a rare 3-0 start for the winner.
Down in south Lauderdale County, Clarkdale goes for an historic third straight win when they host the Southeast Lauderdale Tigers. Clarkdale, who had a 39-game losing streak broken last year, is off to a 2-0 start following wins over Edinburg and West Lincoln. Southeast comes in with a 1-1 record having dropped a tough overtime decision to arch rival Northeast Lauderdale.
In Louisville, two tradition rich programs will be vying to avoid a rare 0-3 start. The Meridian Wildcats opened the season with two losses against teams ranked in the Top six in the state in Laurel and Starkville.
Louisville is also 0-2 having fallen to Starkville in week one and then again to Tupelo last week.
Other games around the area include: Greene County at Quitman, Enterprise-Clarke at Kemper County, Neshoba Central at Philadelphia, Morton at Newton County, Union at Lake, Wayne County at Laurel, Ackerman at Newton, and Heidelberg at Bay Springs.
There has been no word on the status of the following academy games: Tri-County at Wayne Academy, Newton Academy at East Rankin, Rebul at Sylvia Bay.
On Saturday night, the Choctaw Central Warriors take on Cherokee, N.C.
