DAMASCUS Kemper County authorities are investigating a fire that destroyed a century-old Baptist church this morning about 5 a.m.
The fire occurred at Corinth Baptist Church on Highway 495. A sheriff's department spokesman said arson is not suspected.
Firefighters from three volunteer fire departments, including Bailey VFD in Lauderdale County, were able to save the brick fellowship hall connected to the wooden church building.
The church is located about 6 miles from the Lauderdale County line.
Volunteers from Damascus and Preston VFDs were also dispatched, a total of more than 20 firefighters.
