Meridian firefighters host benefits
The Meridian Fire Department is selling $12 T-shirts this week at the Queen City State Fair, featuring photos of New York City firefighters raising the American Flag. Proceeds will go the families of firefighters who died in last month's terrorist attacks. The fair continues through Sunday at the Lauderdale County Agri-center.
The Meridian Fire Department also will sponsor a barbecue fund-raiser from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at the Frank Cochran Center. Barbecue plates are $6; proceeds also will go to New York firefighters' families.
God Bless America' benefit yard sale
Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church will host a "God Bless America" benefit yard sale Oct. 12 -13 in the church parking lot at 5025 Zero Road from 7 a.m.-1 p.m. Proceeds will go to relief efforts in New York City. Sale to benefit Hilltop Homes

Noxapater Cotton Gin Festival Saturday

Clarke County hosts annual forestry festival
The 12th Annual Forestry and Wildlife Festival will be Saturday at Archusa Creek Water Park in Quitman. The event will feature live entertainment, taxidermy displays, an archery competition and tours of the lake and park .

Alzheimer's Walk set for Saturday
The Alzheimer's Memory Walk is set for Saturday at Bonita Lakes. Registration will begin at 8:15 a.m.; the walk is at 9 a.m. Participating counties include Clarke, Jasper, Kemper, Lauderdale, Leake, Neshoba, Newton, Scott and Smith. For information, call 483-4720 or 484-6180.
St. Joseph hosts OctoberFest
St. Joseph Catholic Church will host an OctoberFest and Family Fun Day on Saturday. The event starts at 11 a.m. on the church grounds at the corner of 19th Street and 18th Avenue.
Activities include basketball, volleyball, sack races, horseshoes and tug-of-war. An early-bird rummage sale begins at 8 a.m. Barbecue chicken and fish plates will be on sale for $5.

Oakland Heights UMC hosts Fall Fest
Oakland Heights United Methodist Church will hold their annual Fall Fest Friday and Saturday. Crafts will be on sale from 4 p.m.-6 p.m. Friday and starting at 7 a.m. Saturday.
Saturday will also include a bake sale, rummage sale and barbecue chicken plates will be on sale from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Free delivery on five or more plates.

Make-A-Wish to meet in Meridian
The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Mississippi will hold its monthly Meridian volunteer luncheon on Oct. 11 from 11:45 a.m.-1 p.m. at Rush Medical Group, 6th floor board room.

Calvary Christian School hosts Fall Festival

Genealogy fair to be held in Jackson
Family Research Association of Mississippi (FRA) will host the 4th annual Genealogy Fair from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Oct. 13 at the Agriculture &Forestry Museum in Jackson.
The meeting will be in the forestry auditorium of the museum on Lakeland Drive at I-55 North. Salvation Army holds Christmas registration
The Salvation Army will be taking applications for needy families seeking Christmas assistance. Applications will be taken from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 15-20. Those applying must bring the following:
Identification. Adults must have a driver's license, picture ID or Social Security card. Children need a birth certificate, Medicaid card and Social Security card;
Proof of residence. Applicants must bring a lease, utility bill or rent receipt; and
Proof of income. Applicants must bring check subs, Social Security, food stamps, child support, unemployment or retirement.

St. Patrick hosts annual fall festival
St. Patrick School will host its annual Fall Carnival and Spaghetti Dinner Oct. 27 in the St. Patrick Family Life Center, next to the school at 2700 Davis St. in Meridian. The carnival will be from 6 p.m.-9 p.m. Admission is $1 per person, with a maximum of $5 per family. Spaghetti dinners, at $5 a plate, will be served from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Take-outs are available.
