A suspect in the Wednesday robbery of AmSouth Bank was being held Thursday on misdemeanor charges and could face felony charges as early as today.
The suspect was booked into the Lauderdale County Detention Facility shortly after 9 p.m. Thursday.
Police Lt. Wade Johnson said he could release no information about the suspect because special agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation are the primary investigators in the case. The FBI agents were not available for comment.
It was not determined if the suspect is also being questioned about the Sept. 13 and Sept. 18 bank robberies of Citizen's National Bank branches.
Police earlier said there were similarities in all three robberies.
Witnesses in the AmSouth Bank robbery reported seeing the gunman fleeing the parking lot north on foot and getting into a light green 1970s model Oldsmobile or Buick.
Police have interviewed several witnesses since the robbery occurred. The bank robbery was Meridian's third in 2001 and one of about 88 robberies that have plagued the city since Jan. 1.
