Chances are you saw some helpful people wearing yellow T-shirts somewhere in town Wednesday because it was Meridian Community College's "My College Cares Day."
Each year, the college shuts down for a day as students, faculty and staff volunteer their services in the community.
At Hope Village for Children, soon to open as a home for abused and neglected children, about 25 volunteers lowered the height of beds making them child-sized for small children at the Peavey House. Volunteers raked leaves, inventoried and unpacked furniture and removed ceiling tiles from the cafeteria to help prepare the room for renovation.
English instructor Barbara Jones was the "My College Cares Day" team captain at Hope Village for Children.
Jones also plans to take the experience into the classroom by having her students write about volunteerism.
