For the first time in six seasons, the Meridian High School girls' basketball team is nationally-ranked.
The Lady Wildcats, who are a perfect 14-0 on the season after Thursday night's victory over Heidelberg, were tabbed as the No. 23 team in the nation by USA-Today in Wednesday's Top 25 poll.
The Lady Wildcats have been ranked No. 1 in the state of Mississippi by the Clarion-Ledger for the past two weeks. Meridian is also expected to be ranked No. 1 when The Associated Press releases its first poll in January that is, if MHS can stay unbeaten between now and then.
The last time MHS was nationally-ranked was during the 1994-95 season, when Meridian started the year 15-0 and finished 32-2 as the Class 5A state runnerup.
