BRANDON In basketball, having depth is a crucial element. And Friday night Ernie Watson's crew showed they have all the elements. The Meridian High Wildcats used relentless defense and plenty of fresh bodies to wear down the Brandon Bulldogs 86-63.
DECATUR The 81-game homecourt winning streak of the Choctaw Central girls has been well publicized. And with the way the Lady Warriors played in front of an estimated crowd of nearly 1,000 at Newton County Friday night, they'd might as well been on their on home floor. Choctaw blitzed Newton County with 12 straight points early in the third quarter and never trailed again, knocking off the Lady Cougars 76-61 to claim the regular-season Division 5-3A crown.

NEW ORLEANS Vince Lombardi never would have recognized the style. He surely would have been familiar with the result. The Green Bay Packers put the title back in Titletown USA with a 35-21 victory over the New England Patriots on Sunday. For the first time in 29 years, since the storied days of Lombardi ended with the Packers taking the first two Super Bowls, the NFL's smallest city is its biggest winner.
Tennessee coach Pat Summitt promised her Volunteers they'd get 20 wins this season. After losing to Florida last week, No. 8 Tennessee needed to win seven of its last 10 games five of which are against ranked opponents to reach its goal. Tennessee (14-7, 3-3 SEC) jumped the first hurdle Sunday, traveling to No. 4 Alabama and leaving with a 63-60 victory snapping the Crimson Tide's school-record 14-game winning streak.

MINNEAPOLIS The Washington Redskins play in the NFC. Enough said. These days, the NFC wins the Super Bowl. Every year, in nearly the same manner, the result is the same. The Redskins were perfect practitioners of NFC football on Sunday. They romped past the Buffalo Bills 37-24, running the conference's winning streak to eight straight Super Bowls and 10 of the last 11.
CHICAGO The Chicago Bulls started the second half of the season the way they finished 36 of their first 41 games with a win. That gives the defending NBA champions a 13-game winning streak as they hit the road for a six-game trip. Off to the second best start in league history, the Bulls are on a pace that would shatter the best regular-season record of 69-13 set by the 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers.

The Answer …
State beat the Meridian All-Stars in 1925, 1927 and 1930 and down Meridian College 48-31 in 1920.
Sports Faces …
Frannie Childs
Frannie Childs has always loved running. She's been an avid runner since she was little.
Childs totaled a whopping total of 221 points based on her performance in the MAA's running, swimming, cycling and triathlon events. She out-distanced her nearest competitor by nearly 70 points.
But for Childs, there is more to the MAA than just competition.
