JACKSON Rarely does the final score in a soccer match reflect how a match was played. That was definitely the case with the Meridian High Lady Wildcats Friday afternoon in the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 5A South State championship game. Meridian dominated from start to finish, out-shooting Harrison Central 24-7. But the Lady Wildcats still had to hold off the Red Rebelettes in the final minutes, as MHS nipped Harrison Central 2-1 to claim the South State title and move into today's Class 5A state championship game.
JACKSON Under horrid field conditions at Newell field, Todd Doolittle and his teammates controlled the ball all night and the West Lauderdale Knights blanked Corinth 2-0 to claim the North State championship for the third straight year and move into today's state championship game.

It's finally known how Kansas would react to a loss. The Jayhawks won. Top-ranked Kansas lost for the first time this season last Tuesday in double overtime at Missouri. On Sunday, the Jayhawks used some impressive second-half defense to beat No. 9 Iowa State 69-62 to avoid losing consecutive games for the first time since February 1994.
COLUMBUS, Ga. Chad Mathis and Chris White hit solo home runs to lead No. 5 Columbus State to a 3-1 win over The University of West Alabama here Sunday afternoon. The Cougars moved to 2-0 overall while the Tigers fell to 0-2 overall.

ORLANDO, Fla. Magic Johnson raised his arms in triumph one more time and savored the moment, satisfied that his farewell All-Star performance was a huge success and answered any lingering questions about whether he can still play the game. The NBA's career assists leader was the star of stars Sunday in what amounted to a giant going-away party for Johnson, who retired three months ago after testing positive for the virus that causes AIDS.
ATHENS, Ga. Reggie Tinch told his Georgia teammates before the game he was tired of losing. Tinch then led by example, scoring a career-high 24 points to lead the Bulldogs to an 86-66 rout of Mississippi in a Southeastern Conference game that was deadlocked at 38-38 at halftime.

Bill Fike
Bill Fike is one of the top league bowlers at Dixie Bowl here in Meridian.
Fike says he has been a fixture at the bowling alley for the past 30 years. He is currently averaging 221 pins a game in the Men's Open League.
Fike bowled a perfect 300 game in 1997 in Meridian. His highest series was a 775. "I had a couple of 260's and one 270 mixed in there,' he said.
Fike says one the reasons why he is able to stay on top of his game is playing in tournaments.
