TUPELO Katrina King and Jamie Howard combined to score Delta State University's final 16 points as the Lady Statesmen claimed the 2001 Gulf South Conference title here Sunday afternoon at Bancorp-South arena with a 60-52 victory over the Arkansas Tech Golden Suns. The title was the Lady Statesmen's third straight and sixth in the last seven years. Delta State also improved its winning streak to 15 games and currently owns the most wins in NCAA Division II with a 30-2 record.
OXFORD Ronnie Goodwin pitched a complete game in leading Ole Miss to a 3-2 win over in-state rival Southern Miss Sunday afternoon, and earlier in the day, Evan Conley's bases loaded single in the bottom of the 17th gave the Rebels a 5-4 win over Arizona in a resumed game from Saturday. The 17-inning contest lasted a total of 5 hours and 4 minutes and was the longest in school history.

After having its season-opener at Hillcrest of Tuscaloosa, Ala. rained out last Thursday, the Clarkdale Lady Bulldogs showed no signs of rust from inactivity Tuesday. The Lady Bulldogs got their third season of fast-pitch softball off to a glittering start, sweeping a doubleheader from visiting Greensboro, Ala. High, 8-0 and 13-0.
Paul Phillips, Reggie Scott, Josh Perkins, Scott Cheek and Buddy Wyers each ripped home runs Tuesday afternoon to lead the No. 1 ranked Meridian Community College Eagles to a 20-2 win against the Wallace-Selma Community College Patriots in the first game of a junior college baseball doubleheader at MCC field.

CLINTON For years Meridian Community College and East Central Community College have been separated by 25 miles of highway. Now they're only separated by three points. Wednesday afternoon at Mississippi College MCC and East Central played basketball for the first time in five years. MCC beat ECCC 55-52 in double overtime before an A.E. Wood Coliseum day-time crowd of 200. Meridian forced a tempo that had both teams shoot 33.8 percent from the field. The win puts Meridian in the Region 23 tournament finals tonight at 7:45 against Northeast, a 64-63 winner over Gulf Coast.
The Meridian High School tennis team got off on the right foot Wednesday, blanking South Jones 5-0 in area prep tennis action. The closest South Jones got to a win was in mixed doubles, where Meridian's Courtney Bailey and Trey cooper pulled out a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Todd Lewis and Mandy Morris.

Sherrod Miller
Sherrod Miller is in his third season as an assistant on Ernie Watson's Meridian High School basketball team. Miller joined Watson after serving as a head coach at Shannon High School.
As the senior assistant, Miller helps Watson go over all aspects of team management.
The Wildcats, 21-11, find themselves playing Harrison Central today for a berth in the 5A State Boys title game.
Miller said the Wildcats were able to overome a slow start by playing in a pair of out of state tournaments.
