SCOOBA Maybe in retrospect, the East Mississippi Community College Lady Lions will look back on Tuesday's doubleheader and realize that playing a team the caliber of Meridian Community College will be beneficial. For now, however, it will simply be regarded as a thorough whipping. Robert Eakins' Lady Eagle squad continued its strong midseason roll with a sweep of the host Lady Lions, winning the first game, 3-1, the running away with the closer, 12-1. With the sweep, the Lady Eagles ran their record to 27-9 and haven't lost in eight outings, dating back to last month.
STARKVILLE Former Meridian Community College and West Lauderdale High School baseball standout Daniel Stewart picked up his third victory of the season Tuesday night, when he helped Southern Miss knock off arch-rival Mississippi State, 6-2. Stewart, a junior improved to 3-3 overall this season and helped lift the recently-struggling Golden Eagles back to the .500 mark at 20-20.

Quitman's track team wanted to run away from the competition Thursday. They did. The Panthers and Lady Panthers swept the District 5-4A boys and girls track championship at Meridian Community College. Quitman scored 195 team points in the boys division, outscoring second-place R.H. Watkins 195-168. The Quitman girls won with 209 point, again bettering R.H. Watkins' 172 points.
After losing 7-0 to Shelton State Community College in Tuscaloosa, Ala., little over a week ago, Scott Berry's top-ranked Eagles got a little revenge Thursday night at MCC Field. No. 1 Meridian Community College banged out 16 hits en route to a 17-3 rout of the visiting Buccaneers in junior college baseball action. With starting shortstop and leadoff hitter Jason Smith out of the lineup with an injury after getting hit on the wrist with a pitch last weekend at No. 7 Dekalb (Ga.) College, Berry had to reshuffle the batting order and lineup. It didn't matter.

Seminary High School was the one that almost got away for the Clarkdale Bulldogs Friday night in an all important division battle at Clarkdale. But with a 9-5 win over Seminary, the Bulldogs put themselves in a four way tie for first place. Now Clarkdale, Southeast Lauderdale, Enterprise and Taylorsville are all tied for the division 5-2A lead with 4-2 records.
