The Southeast Lauderdale baseball team ran into a hot hitting Greene County ballclub at home Friday night as the visiting Wildcats ended the Tigers' season thanks to a 21-2 victory to claim the best-of-three series in two games. Larry Ethridge's squad was unable to fight back from some early mistakes and was forced to play catch up the rest of the night.
The Lamar School Raiders saw their hopes of making the MPSA AAA playoffs get crushed on Friday night, when visiting Central Hinds Academy banged out 19 hits to take a 19-6 win in the second game of a doubleheader at Jim Wall Field. Lamar had come from behind to take a dramatic 9-5 win in the first game of the doubleheader, but the second game loss dropped the Raiders to 4-4 in division play and ruined their playoff hopes.

STARKVILLE Both Mississippi State and alabama have had serious trouble getting consistent pitching out of the third spot in their SEC pitching rotations. Sunday at newly-named Dudy Noble Field, Polk-Dement Stadium, Alabama's Manny Torres and MSU's Chris Reinike hooked up in a duel, not only trying for a win, but also looking to establish their place in their team's rotation. Through five innings, Reinike had the hard-hitting Tide sufficiently off balance enough that a Bulldog sweep appeared likely. But then either Reinike lost steam or the Tide bats woke up, as the Tide scored three runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh, taking the lead and holding on for a crucial 6-3 SEC victory.

BOSTON Plenty of runners had speed and stamina. Ibrahim Hussein and Olga Markova also had the smarts to survive a brisk early pace. They lurked hundreds of yards behind the early leaders, saving their energy and waiting for the pacesetters to poop out. Then they spurted ahead and galloped the final six miles unchallenged in the Boston Marathon. And both crossed the finish line Monday with fantastic times. Hussein, a Kenyan who won his third Boston Marathon and second in a row, had the second best men's time of the 96 races in the event's history, 2 hours, 8 minutes, 14 seconds. Markova, a Russian making her first Boston appearance, won in 2:23:43, the second best women's time in Boston since 1972, when women became official competitors in the race, and the best women's time in the world in five years.

Matt Minchew
For the East Mississippi Community College Lions to have success for the rest of this season and next year, look for Matt Minchew to play a big part.
The Clarkdale freshman has played a key role this season filling in where needed in the Lions' lineup. Primarily, Minchew plays shortstop and his defensive play has been a big help for the Lions this season.
On Monday, East won the Judges Cup beating East Central 4-3 in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Last summer, Minchew reached a competitive highlight by leading the Meridian Dixie Majors to the Dixie Majors World Series title.
