Knights slip by Newton County for division title

The West Lauderdale tennis team won three of the five finals at the Division 5-3A tennis tournament last Thursday to take the title from Newton County.
Both teams finished tied with six match points apiece. By winning the three finals, the Knights were awarded the team trophy.
The Cougars, who won titles in boys singles and girls doubles, qualified all five of its teams for the State 3A Tournament set to begin next Monday at the Ridgeland Tennis Courts in Jackson.
West Lauderdale, who swept all three doubles titles, will also send girls singles player Amy Frazier to the state tourney. Philadelphia's Dustin Turner qualified in boys singles play.
The Cougar qualifiers included boys singles champion Mylan Anderson who beat Turner in the final 6-0, 6-4. Britley Kimbril took the girls singles crown by beating Frazier 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 in the division finals.
West Lauderdale came back with the boys doubles team of Daniel Rigdon and Jason Blanks beating Newton County's Kenard Johnson and Josh Cook 6-3, 6-3 in the finals.
The Knights' mixed doubles team of Dee Dallas and Jessica Lee beat Luke Howell and Kacey Bond 6-2, 6-4 for the title.
In girls doubles, West Lauderdale's Brook Bounds and Brittney Wright defeated Newton County's Keri McDill and Melissa Kimbril 7-5, 7-6 (7-3).
