The season is on the line Saturday when Meridian Community College meets up with rival Bossier Parish CC for a key Region 23/Miss-Lou Conference double-header at Northeast Park.
The teams will play two games at Northeast beginning at 11 a.m. Next week, Meridian heads to Bossier City, La., to face Bossier for two more games. If the two teams were to split the four-game set, a fifth game tie-breaker to determine the Region 23 champion would be needed.
MCC softball coach Robert Eakins hopes his team can take care of matters and not have to worry about a fifth game. The Lady Eagles are defending Region 23 champs and advanced on to the National Junior College World Series in Florida last May.
This year, though, has been a struggle as Meridian (31-26) has been inconsistent at the plate. It is a big concern for Eakins.
Bossier Parish has beaten a traditional power in San Jacinto this season, but that is the extent of Eakins' report on his foe.
Dixon, a sophomore from British Columbia, Canada, leads the team with a .413 batting average. The shortstop was a starter on last year's World Series team.
Clarkdale's Morgan Wright will move back to the leadoff spot.
Other key batters for the Lady Eagles are Dreka Shumpert, Lindsey Stamm, Kaylora Bingham and Robin Holland.
On the mound, MCC will go with Canadian freshman Anne McLean. North Pontotoc freshman Ashlee Frazier could also see action.
