State Rep. Greg Snowden, R-Meridian, is scheduled to receive the Mississippi Law Enforcement Officers Association Legislator of the Year Award today.
The association honors one representative and one senator with the award in recognition of their support of law enforcement. State Sen. Tom King, R-Petal, who represents the 44th District, is the other recipient.
Lauderdale County Sheriff Billy Sollie said Snowden deserves the award.
Snowden was the principal author of a bill that becomes law on July 1 requiring prosecutors and investigators to show probable cause in a Circuit Court hearing before arresting an officer for alleged wrong-doing. A similar law is already in place for public school teachers.
Snowden said that along with taxes and education, public safety is one of the top concerns of constituents.
With about 2,500 members, the MLEOA is the largest law enforcement organization in the state. Its membership includes officers from federal, state and local law enforcement agencies throughout Mississippi.
The association is scheduled to present Snowden and King with the awards during a banquet tonight, part of an annual conference being held in Hattiesburg this week.
