Local businessman Jim McGinnis said he clearly sees how a strong public education system is directly linked to economic development and poverty.
McGinnis is the chairman of the East Mississippi Business Development Corp. education committee. He's also the father of three public school children.
And he is a member of Parents for Public Schools, better known as PPS a district-wide, politically active group of parents and citizens interested in improving the city's public school system.
On Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., the Meridian chapter of PPS will have its first meeting at the Meridian High School auditorium. The public is invited.
McGinnis talked about the organization last week with The Meridian Star editorial board. Serving as EMBDC education chairman and having three school-age children prompted his interest in PPS .
McGinnis said he believes that an educated workforce is critical to economic development and will help lure new industry and jobs to the Meridian area.
