A Lauderdale County jail inmate who walked off a city work detail remained at large today and could face escape charges when he is found.
Police Chief Benny DuBose said Fred Harry Crosby, 23, of Meridian, was assigned to work at Union Station when he left sometime Tuesday morning.
DuBose said Crosby signed up Monday to work off old fines after being arrested Oct. 5 for contempt of court. DuBose did not have details why Crosby was charged with contempt.
Crosby is black, 6 feet tall and 130 pounds. His last address was 4524 Highway 39 N., Apt. C-78.
DuBose said Crosby had been in jail and working under the supervision of the train station custodian. His escape was the second one within a month by a prisoner assigned to a city work crew.
Last month, Marcus J. Rew, 21, left the Meridian police station after being assigned to pick up trash along roadsides. Rew, who was also charged with contempt of court, was later recaptured.
