Baseball: Vina boys prepare to take next step

The Vina Red Devils were one game away from the playoffs this past year and dropped game three to the Hackleburg Panthers. Vina coach Donavan Hand said he is preaching to his team this year to take that next step.

One thing that gives Hand hope his team can do that is a deep pitching staff. “They will have to step up and play for us to take that next step,” he said.

The top three pitchers going into the season are senior Jackson Landers (P, SS), junior Haze Weatherford (P, IF) and sophomore Trenton Alack.

“I am really confident in these guys and some others to get the job done,” said Hand.

Other players the Red Devils will rely on are senior Braden Moomaw (CF), junior Zac Davidson (1B) and sophomore Isac Shelton (C, 3B).

“We have some good team chemistry, but I think we will be a team that peaks late,” Hand explained. “We should have a chance to make some noise if we do the right things.”

Hand said there are some little things his team needs to overcome to make the right turn.

“We have to play solid fundamental defense, swing the bat better and play the game,” Hand said. “Sometimes we get caught up in being spectators.

“We have a good young group of players, and I think the future is bright at Vina.”

The Red Devils play in an area with Covenant Christian, Phillips, Belgreen and Hackleburg.
