Meridian's own Farmers Market houses some of the best home-grown vegetables and fruits in East Mississippi.
The Farmers Market has been under the 18th Avenue bridge in downtown Meridian for most of its 20 years. For several years during work on Union Station, the market was at Highland Park.
And for most of its 20 years, Clarke County farmer R.L. McLemore has been there selling his vegetables, watermelons and peanuts.
Farmers sell their vegetables at the end of May and continue through the end of the year. They display their produce in the back of their trucks.
Between 25 and 30 farmers are members of the Farmers Association an organization that interested residents can join by calling Steve Strong, the area horticulture extension agent.
Membership is $30 a year.
This is the first year Meridian resident Alvin Wilkinson has been involved with the Farmers Market.
Strong believes the market is an asset to Meridian and an outlet for mom-and-pop farmers who plant a small area of land.
