NEWTON Volunteers are devoting their Saturday morning to have the town clean when visitors come.
Karen Freeman, chairman of the Newton Chamber of Commerce's Beautification Committee, recently declared a "litter emergency" and started pushing the clean-up efforts.
There is a three-fold purpose behind this effort.
First, Freeman said Newton is in the running to be a site for some of the feeder supply plants for the Nissan Plant being constructed in Madison County.
Also, the town's historic tours will start next Thursday and Freeman said that is another reason to keep things clean. And finally, Freeman said Newton will like get some visitors who are on their way to the The Majesty of Spain exhibit in Jackson, which opens March 1.
Volunteers also worked last weekend.
This is not a concentrated effort such as the Litter Free America campaign, which comes at the end of March.
She added others are picking up in their neighborhoods.
