Like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Linda Wilson-Jones had a dream. Hers was that one day Meridian would stage a parade in King's honor.
Wilson-Jones' dream materialized in only a year, an ample achievement which resulted in her selection by the Council of Government's Human Relations Commission as a "Citizen of the Year."
She shared the recognition, announced Tuesday night, with Meridian insurance executive Bruce Martin, a key player in the establishment of another dream.
Stephens said in the future, the commission will selected one "Citizen of the Year." That person should display the qualifications designated by the commission.
The commission was formed in 1989 to foster relationships in Lauderdale County between governments, community leaders and citizens, he said.
Both recipients received certificates at Tuesday's city council meeting and a plaque bearing their names will be displayed publicly.
