Officials and supporters of the Boys and Girls Club of Lauderdale County may have to work a little harder this year to raise money, after the organization lost a state-funded grant received last year.
Darrell Weir, executive director of the local Boys and Girls Club, said officials there wrote three grants requesting $150,000 from the Mississippi Department of Human Services. The grants would have funded programs in Quitman, the Meridian Housing Authority branch and the main campus of the Boys and Girls Club of Lauderdale County.
Weir said last year was the first year the local club applied for the grants, which fund prevention intervention programs and after-school assistance.
The Boys and Girls Club of Lauderdale County has received two other grants, but those, too, were for less money than they were last year.
But the funding cuts won't mean laying off staff, compromising programs or closing the doors, Weir said.
