Vina Red Devils win streak continues

VINA — The Vina Red Devils varsity baseball team continued their winning streak on Monday by defeating Waterloo 18-0 in game one and 10-0 in game two.

The Red Devils then beat Covenant Christian 16-0 on Tuesday.

In game one against Waterloo Vina scored nine runs in the first inning. Nick Schmittou went 3 for 4 with two doubles, a triple and five RBIs. One of those doubles netted Vina three runs in the first inning.

Adam Pharr had four RBIs on three hits including a double.

Taylor Hamilton had an RBI double for the Red Devils, and Drake Hester picked up two hits, including a double.

The winning pitcher in game one was Brady Roberts, who allowed no runs and only two hits in five innings with 12 strikeouts and one walk.

Schmittou was the winning pitcher in game two against Waterloo. He gave up no runs and two hits with five strikeouts in five and two-thirds innings.

Hamilton had an RBI single in the first and third inning for Vina.

The Red Devils scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth, including a two-run triple by Andrew Hester, who also had an RBI single in the fifth.

Andrew Hester had three hits in game two, including a double and triple with three RBIs.

Vina’s success spilled over into its game against Covenant Christian. The Red Devils scored eight runs in the first inning with hits by Clay Pierce, Schmittou, Hamilton, Drake Hester, Ethan Pharr and Andrew Hester.

Kyle Childers brought in two runs in the second inning.

Ethan Pharr, Andrew Hester and Childers each had multiple hits against Covenant Christian.

Hamilton was the winning pitcher. He threw for four innings and gave up two hits on six strikeouts.

The wins put Vina at 9-2 on the season.
