Students would benefit from local history

Area students would benefit from a local history course when school resumes in August, when students will be hitting the books to learn math, English, science and history, among other subjects. But those history lessons probably won't include information about Franklin County.
Franklin County was founded in 1815 by Maj. William Russell, a commanding officer for Andrew Jackson, and a historical marker unveiled Tuesday honors his memory.
The county has a rich history that is being revived by the Franklin County Archives through special projects, such as a DVD set that features a comprehensive history of the area, and the set is scheduled to be completed this fall.
Roman statesman Cicero wrote that, "History is the witness that testifies to the passing of time; it illuminates reality, vitalizes memory, provides guidance in daily life, and brings us tidings of antiquity."
Students should learn about local history, along with learning about the history of our state, country and the world, and we support any program or project to make that happen.
