Saints send Chase to Redskins

METAIRIE, La. It appears, at least for this season, Meridian's Kenny Smith remains a key part of the New Orleans Saints' plans. Wednesday, the team alleviated some of the logjam that is the defensive tackle position by trading Martin Chase, one of Smith's key competitors at the backup spot, to the Washington Redskins for a seventh-round selection in next year's draft.
It was reported earlier in the week that the Redskins, a team in dire need of good interior linemen, were working the Saints hard to get Smith. But ultimately, it was only Chase whom they were willing to part with.
The sixth-year veteran was claimed by the Saints off waivers from the Baltimore Ravens in 2000 and played in 41 games for New Orleans over the last three seasons, with four starts. He posted 48 tackles and a sack with the Saints.
For his part, Smith said it was bound to happen with so many names in camp.
Smith said he did not feel Chase' departure really helped or hurt him.
According to both the coaches and the way the reps are currently being doled out in training camp, Madison resident Grady Jackson remains the starter at nose tackle, with rookie Johnathan Sullivan at the three technique. Smith is the primary backup at both spots. Haslett said the team would not be making any more trades at that position.
Chase was spotted cleaning out his locker room during the noon hour.
If he plays 40 percent of the time, it will turn into a sixth round choice for the Saints.
Getting out there quick
Haslett said he would not hesitate to put Ki- Jana Carter into action quickly, saying he will get some reps against the San Francisco 49ers this Saturday night.
