One local group that recently held a holiday giveaway is out in the community all year long in order to help people make better lives for themselves and for their families.
On Dec. 20, members of the Northwest Alabama Livestock Farmers Improvement Association (NWALFIA) held a turkey and ham giveaway fundraiser in time for the holidays, but this group does a lot more than just give out turkeys and hams.
According to Frank Graham, who serves as the group’s livestock coordinator, the NWALFIA’s main purpose is to help people in their communities.
One of the advantages the NWALFIA offers to its members is providing a free cow that the member can raise and use for their benefit.
“The only thing we require is that the member give us the first heifer the cow has so that we can turn around and give that cow to someone else who might need it,” Graham said. “Owning cattle can teach people how to be more self-sufficient and it also helps people have a greater understanding of the love we should have for God’s creations and how to properly take care of what God gave us.”
The group’s president, Curt Fuzzell, said the fee to be a member of NWALFIA is $25 but a person gets so much more than that by being involved with many of the groups projects.
“By helping people individually, we help the community as a whole,” Fuzzell said.
“We are paving the way for success by investing in the interests of our communities’ children and adults,” Graham added. “We just want to do what we can to make an impact in the area.”
